Peter Fancy: View from the Studio

This exhibit celebrates the artistic legacy of historian, writer and artist, Peter Fancy. It highlights his love of the landscapes in which he lived and worked, including the shores of Temiskaming. This exhibition was made possible through the support and efforts of Peter’s family.

“No place truly comes to life until it is capable of acting on our imagination. We need more artists to evoke Canada. Not using forms, colours, words which originate elsewhere but those which are provoked by the immediate country and people.” –Peter Fancy, journal entry 1980

Peter Fenwick Fancy was born August 18, 1932 in Kirkland Lake, Ontario. He attended public and high schools in Haileybury. He graduated from Queen’s University with a BA, and a Certificate in Industrial Relations. For the majority of his career he was an English teacher and in 1982, he began writing histories of Northern Ontario, published by Highway Book Shop in Cobalt. He started painting in the early 1960's and started to explore oil painting more in the 1980's.
