Biographies > Lawrence Nickle

Lawrence Nickle has been a landscape painter since 1949, working outdoors in front of his subjects. Although his works are sometimes compared to the Group of Seven, he himself says that he has more in common with impressionists and artists like Turner concerned with the light. He has lived and painted in many parts of Northern Ontario (Brady Lake Cobalt, and The Violet Mine Pithead). In an interview with Heather Saunders for the White Water Gallery, he remarked on the landscape of the Lake Superior region, saying “he had never seen such exciting land”.

Lawrence studied at the Ontario College of Art, taught by artists such as John Alfsen, Roly Murphy and George Pepper. He later did freelance commercial work in both Toronto and Montreal. He moved to the Burke’s Falls region in the 70’s. His paintings are hanging in many private galleries and collections as well as in rental galleries all over Canada.1

Being an artist in northern Ontario. The northern Ontario landscape is the subject matter that I like best; and it is a good market place to make a living from painting sales.  Drawing and painting is fun to do!  It’s the best sort of day job!
