Faye Digulla

Faye Digulla is a visual artist working in printmaking, painting and drawing. Her works are frequently enigmatic and highly personal interpretations. She works from her printmaking studio, North Point Press in Haileybury. Her art is becoming widely known both in northern Ontario and further afield, and is presented by the Open Door Studio in Toronto.

Faye has been interested in art since she was a teenager. She was born and raised in Englehart, moving south after high school. She studied at the Ontario College of Art and later received a Fine Arts degree from the University of Waterloo. She won a scholarship from Open Studio in Toronto and there worked alongside many notable printmaking artists. It was here that she finally had the opportunity to devote her time to the art she loved. Faye also gained valuable experience as an assistant for several years to printer Stu Oxley in Elora.

In describing her recent exhibition shown at TAG and the Kennedy Gallery, Ten Thousand Doors she says, “With these works I have expanded upon the rich symbolism of doors to suggest one’s travel though life. Doors are physical and symbolic barriers or entrances to worlds. Doors both conceal and reveal.” Walk Inside Yourself and Then Listen, comes from this body of work.

Faye shared some of her thoughts on being an artist in northern Ontario saying; "Here I miss not having ready access to galleries and the excitement and stimulus of regularly seeing contemporary artworks that helped evolve my art and created a more natural flow. I find I have to constantly and consciously keep pushing boundaries." - Faye Digulla

Faye Digulla est une artiste de la gravure, de la peinture et du dessin. Ses œuvres sont très souvent des interprétations personnelles fort énigmatiques. Elle travaille à même son atelier de gravures, North Point Press, à Haileybury. Ses pièces sont de plus en plus connues dans le nord de l’Ontario et même hors de la région et sont exposées à l’Open Door Studio de Toronto.

Faye s’intéresse aux arts depuis l’adolescence. Elle a grandi dans sa ville natale d’Englehart et est déménagée dans le sud après son secondaire. Elle a étudié à l’Ontario College of Art et détient un diplôme ès arts plastiques de l’Université de Waterloo. Récipiendaire d’une bourse décernée par Open Studio de Toronto, elle y a travaillé côte à côte avec plusieurs graveurs de renom. C’est là d’ailleurs qu’elle a eu enfin l’occasion de dévouer tout son temps à son art. Faye devait accroître le champ de ses expériences en la matière en travaillant pendant plusieurs années comme assistante de Stu Oxley, imprimeur d’Elora.

Dans une description de l’exposition qu’elle a eue récemment à la GAT et à la galerie Kennedy, Ten Thousand Doors [Dix mille portes], elle disait : « Dans ces œuvres j’ai développé la riche symbolique des portes pour suggérer le cheminement de chacun dans la vie. Les portes sont aussi bien des barrières physiques et symboliques que des passages dans d’autres mondes. Les portes peuvent à la fois dissimuler ou révéler. » Walk Inside Yourself and Then Listen [Marche en toi-même et puis écoute] provient de cette série.
