Valerie Hostetler

Valerie Hostetler said she is drawn to painting wild spaces, to creating elemental landscapes that express the vitality of the land. She wants to pull the viewer in with an abundance of colour and form, as she does in the TAG collection watercolour, Waterfall Near Lost Lake. Originally she worked on location to capture the fleeting movement of nature and life. Later she began working from photographs and this she feels has helped increase the range of detail and dimensions. One year she lived on Lake Temagami and painted the landscape in all four seasons. She says this environment has played a major role in the development of her identity as a painter and a person.

Valerie got her BA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1981 and an Artist in the Community/Bachelor of Education from Queen’s University in 1984. She has had many solo and group exhibitions in Alberta, Ontario and New York.

Au début, elle travaillait d’après nature pour mieux capter sur place les mouvements fugaces de la nature et de la vie. Plus tard elle s’est mise à peindre à partir de photographies, ce qui, lui semble-t-il, a permis d’accroître la gamme des détails et les dimensions. Pendant l’année qu’elle a vécu au lac Témagami, elle a peint des paysages au rythme des quatre saisons. Elle déclare que l’environnement a joué un rôle majeur dans le développement de son identité de peintre, voire de son identité personnelle.

Valérie a obtenu son BA ès beaux-arts de la School of Visual Arts de New York en 1981 et du programme Artiste dans la communauté/Baccalauréat en éducation de l’Université Queen’s en 1984. Elle compte à son actif plusieurs expositions en solo et de groupe en Alberta, en Ontario et à New York.1
