Macrame & Knots - 'At Home Art 14'

Today I wanted to explore some different ways to be creative using knots. Knots are great for working on your fine motor skills and finger strength and they have a multitude of practical uses within our daily lives. In addition to this knots can be visually interesting and at times even beautiful. The art of knotting cord or string in patterns to make decorative articles is called macrame.

The first link I have selected will teach you how to make seven essential knots. These are more practical than decorative but by practicing these knots you will build a stronger foundation for your macrame practice and they have many real-world applications. The next project demonstrates how to use some basic macrame techniques to create a simple dragonfly. This is a fun project for kids and when you are done you can use your dragonfly as a key-chain, a zipper pull or even wear it as a necklace. The third link demonstrates how to make a bracelet using cord and plastic straws. This is another project that is great for kids as again it develops fine motor skills, re-purposes plastic straws and creates a wearable end product. The fourth link is to a video that features creative ways to tie your shoelaces. There are so many interesting variations that I couldn't pick just one, so I have selected this video that shows you a variety of exciting styles you can try. This is such a great way to express your personal style and can even help getting your little one's interested in lace up shoes. The last link is for a macrame plant hanger. You will need more materials for this one as it is a larger project and it will also take a bit more time. However there are many variations to macrame plant hangers and if you are working with less material you can do a quick search on the internet to find a pattern that's going to work for the materials you have. I hope that one of these projects inspires you to explore the wonderful world of knots. Please feel free to like and share. If you do create a macrame masterpiece we would love to see it!
