Michael Dobson

Michael Dobson is a contemporary landscape painter. His enduring connection with urban and rural spaces began at the Ontario College of Art in 1965, where he studied industrial design for three years. During this formative period he often sketched and painted en plein aire with artist mentors and friends. After college, Michael continued to teach himself how to paint while he traveled and explored his homeland, coast to coast. His experimentation with various media, and the original printmaking technique he created during this time, continue to contribute to the expression of his affiliation with the land. Decades of interaction with the Canadian landscape have led to the development of the mature, passionate voice he paints with today. Painting outdoors, exposed to every element that nature imparts, is still his preferred way to paint, and the Canadian landscape is still his favourite subject.

Throughout his career as an artist, Michael has served on numerous art councils, boards, and juries. He became the Director/Curator of the Grimsby Public Art Gallery in 1980, and he co-founded the Lincoln Regional Arts Council in 1985. In 1987, he was elected into the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour. Michael has had over fifty solo exhibitions, and his work has been exhibited in Canada, and internationally, including in the USA, Scotland, England, and Japan. His work can be found in many private, corporate, and public collections.

Michael Dobson est un peintre paysagiste contemporain. Son lien durable avec les espaces urbains et ruraux a commencé à l'Ontario College of Art en 1965, où il a étudié le design industriel pendant trois ans. Au cours de cette période de formation, il a souvent dessiné et peint en plein air avec des mentors et des amis artistes. Après l'université, Michael a continué à apprendre à peindre tout en voyageant et en explorant son pays natal, d'un océan à l'autre. Tout au long de sa carrière d'artiste, Michael a siégé à de nombreux conseils d'art, commissions et jurys. Il est devenu directeur/conservateur de la Grimsby Public Art Gallery en 1980 et il a cofondé le Lincoln Regional Arts Council en 1985. En 1987, il a été élu à la Société canadienne des peintres en aquarelle. Michael a eu plus cinquante expositions solo, et son travail a été exposé au Canada et à l'étranger, notamment aux États-Unis, en Écosse, en Angleterre et au Japon. Son travail se retrouve dans de nombreuses collections privées, corporatives et publiques.
