Katherine Burgman

Katherine Burgman’s two watercolours are soft gentle paintings – one a still life of flowers and the other of Cobalt Lake. For over 30 years, Katherine was a member of the Kirkland Lake Art Club and the Northern Ontario Art Association. She also regularly attended the Artists’ Colonies in Cobalt, considering them to be of enormous value to northern Ontario artists.

Originally from Tilbury, Ontario, Katherine was a descendant of pioneers. She always enjoyed art and said she probably inherited her creative spark from two aunts who taught art in public school. She trained as a dental nurse and with her dentist husband, moved north to Kirkland Lake in 1947. While raising her family Katherine practised her art in a variety of media – acrylics, watercolour, oils, charcoal and impasto. She was always a studio painter and enjoyed experimenting with new techniques.

Les deux aquarelles de Katherine Burgman sont deux peintures toutes de douceur et de gentillesse – l’une, une nature morte de fleurs, et l’autre, une vue du lac de Cobalt. Pendant plus de 30 ans, Katherine a été membre du Kirkland Lake Art Club et de l’Association des artistes du nord de l’Ontario. Elle était également assidue aux Colonies d’artistes de Cobalt, qu’elle jugeait fort bénéfiques aux artistes nord-ontariens.

Elle a toujours aimé les arts et croit avoir été stimulée à manier le pinceau par l’exemple de deux tantes qui enseignaient les arts plastiques à l’école publique. Infirmière dentaire de formation, elle s’établira dans le nord en 1947 pour accompagner à Kirkland Lake son mari dentiste. Tout en élevant sa famille, Katherine continuera de peindre en variant les procédés : peinture à l’huile ou à l’acrylique, aquarelle, fusain, impasto. Peintre de studio, elle tirait plaisir à expérimenter de nouvelles techniques.
