Plexus: Interdependence, Duty, and Survival / l'interdépendance, notre devoir et la survie explores the connections between the human and natural worlds, our interdependence, and our duty to act now such that our beautiful planet Earth will not only survive, but thrive.
Co-curated by Cesar Forero and Felicity Buckell, Plexus comprises 46 works from six Ontario artists: Michael Couchie of Nipissing First Nation, Lisa Murzin of Toronto, Tina Poplawski of Tiny, Christian Bernard Singer of Parry Sound, Clare Ross of King City, and Jennifer Walton of Toronto. Plexus is funded by Le Centre culturel ARTEM and the Ontario Arts Council.
'Plexus' refers to a complex network of intricate connections. This is the foundation of the exhibition: considering, close-at-hand, the connections between each other as artists, between northern and southern communities, rural and urban; between the man-made and natural worlds; and amongst the natural world itself.
Brought together to reflect upon as a whole, the diverse works chosen for this exhibition provide a deeper understanding of such connections, the more profound kind of awareness and appreciation that only the arts can bring to our often overly fact-driven ways of thinking.
With a better understanding of such interdependencies, we hope that there develops a recognition of duty, and consequent opportunity to explore ways in which we can act with the urgency that is necessary in order to address climate change. This is our only hope for survival as a species, and the survival of this land for which we have been gifted to care.
We are grateful to all those who have helped us present Plexus: Interdependence, Duty, and Survival / l'interdépendance, notre devoir et la survie at the galerie d'art du Temiskaming Art Gallery April 16 — May 26, 2023, and at the Museum of Northern History in Kirkland Lake in August 2023.
We hope you enjoy the selection of works presented in this exhibition booklet.
