Chelsea Smith

Chelsea Smith is a visual artist from the small Northern town of Englehart, Ontario. She completed her undergrad in Drawing and Painting at OCAD University in May 2020. While at OCAD U she completed her thesis where she focused on the topics of place and ancestral heritage through the exploration of natural and handmade earth pigments she has foraged from within her homeplace and surrounding area.

Chelsea is continuing to develop her creative process and research by documenting the nature that surrounds her through photo and video as well as collecting materials for paint making.

The notions of my homeplace, family, and my family’s heritage with a core concept of “all my relations” are the driving forces in my work. Through the use of natural materials such as rocks and soil from my homeplace I am rediscovering and strengthening my connections to ancestors and land.

This painting was the very first step towards the painting journey I am currently on. It was a step between painting the textures found in nature and the actual making of pigments from nature. I used Z.E.C. as a main binder, which has a slight pine scent to it, a number of dried and crushed barks and pine needles from the Englehart area and a base created with fragments of actual found bark and some acrylic mediums.

Chelsea Smith est une artiste visuelle de la petite ville nordique d'Englehart, en Ontario. Elle a terminé ses études de premier cycle en dessin et peinture à l'Université OCAD en mai 2020. Pendant son séjour à l'Université OCAD, elle a terminé sa thèse où elle s'est concentrée sur les sujets du lieu et du patrimoine ancestral à travers l'exploration de pigments de terre naturels et faits à la main qu'elle a trouvés dans sa maison. et ses environs.

Chelsea continue de développer son processus créatif et ses recherches en documentant la nature qui l'entoure à travers la photo et la vidéo ainsi qu'en collectant des matériaux pour la fabrication de peinture.

Les notions de mon lieu d'origine, de ma famille et de l'héritage de ma famille avec un concept central de "toutes mes relations" sont les forces motrices de mon travail. Grâce à l'utilisation de matériaux naturels tels que les roches et le sol de mon lieu d'origine, je redécouvre et renforce mes liens avec les ancêtres et la terre.

Cette peinture était la toute première étape vers le voyage de peinture que je suis actuellement. C'était une étape entre la peinture des textures trouvées dans la nature et la fabrication proprement dite de pigments à partir de la nature. J'ai utilisé Z.E.C. comme liant principal, qui a une légère odeur de pin, un certain nombre d'écorces et d'aiguilles de pin séchées et broyées de la région d'Englehart et une base créée avec des fragments d'écorce trouvée et des médiums acryliques.
