Biographies > Rose-Aimée Belanger

Rose Aimée Belanger creates ceramic, bronze and sandstone sculptures inspired by the people and life that surround her in her Earlton home and on her travels. The works she creates are full of life and candid expression. Most show a sense of compassion and many works are full of a quiet warm humour. They show people doing everyday work or enjoying the simple pleasures of life. A woman enjoys a chocolate, or a giddy moment on a swing; others pick berries or share some gossip. Men take a lunch break. While most of her people have inflated robust forms, the TAG collection piece is of a tall languid woman asleep or resting from reading.

Rose-Aimée Belanger was born in 1923 in Temiscamingue County, Quebec. In 1945 she began studying at l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montreal. However, it was only after she raised eight children was she able to return to her love of sculpture. She currently lives and works in her studio in Earlton, Ontario. Here she has created a comprehensive body of work in clay, with many subsequently cast in bronze. She begins by sketching impressions and creating small models before the actual sculpture begins. Her work can be found in private and corporate collections around the world.

Being an artist in northern Ontario.  I am keenly aware of surroundings, living in Northern Ontario has enabled my work to evolve on its own terms.
