Biographies > Alfred Muma
Alfred Muma is a painter and printmaker with over 32 years experience. He has worked in a variety of media including acrylics, oils, mixed media and watercolour in a realistic expressive style. He has also done a number of mural projects. He works both in the studio and on location. In describing his work, he says, “I don’t paint pretty pictures for people just to look at; rather images that demand the viewer to use their imagination and emotions to become involved within themselves… (Sunflight, in the TAG collection). My inspiration comes from nature, music, people and from contemplative silence. Silence is very important for me as it is a place where I can go to be myself and to learn. The white of the paper or canvas that I leave is that image's Silence. That Silence belongs to whoever is viewing it at that moment and whoever will allow themselves to participate within it. Colour is important to me because it is the means of expressing my emotions while painting. There is a lot of colour and energy in music - sometimes I wish I were a composer and musician as well as a painter, but I guess I'll have to be content with painting music…When I paint landscapes I only paint that part of the scene which is inspiring me. If one cloud out of ten speaks to me I don't paint the other nine.”1
Alfred has lived and worked in Powell River, British Columbia for many years. Previously he had a studio in Bancroft, Ontario. He has exhibited extensively, including at the Malaspina Exhibit Centre Powell River and the Victoria Arts Connection in 2006. Group exhibitions include the 2007 Art Expos in Las Vegas and New York. His work is in corporate and private collections across Canada, the United States, Gt. Britain, Europe, China and Australia.
