Art from the Forest Floor | l’Art du tapis forestier | Nopiming Ojichigan Mochisag is a collaborative arts education project exploring climate change through visual and literary arts. Northern Ontario artists Taman Bradette, Felicity Buckell, and Brit Griffin worked with students from St Patrick School Cobalt, ÉSC Sainte-Marie, and Kiwetin Kikinamading.
Funding for this project was provided by the Ontario Arts Council - Conseil des arts de l'Ontario Northern Arts Program, as well as local support from the Rotary Club of Temiskaming Shores and Area, Cobalt Legion, the The Corporation of the City of Temiskaming Shores, and The Temiskaming Foundation.
The gallery show at TAG is the finale stage of the project and showcases some of the student work produced over the past year. To see more behind the scenes visit the Art from the Forest Floor Facebook page.

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Group of Seven’s first exhibition, the Temiskaming Art Gallery invited artists of Northern Ontario (as defined by the NOAA) and NorthWestern Quebec to submit their own interpretations of Canadian identity. The Group of Seven was highly successful in presenting a unified image of Canadian identity rooted in the motif of the untamed North. TAG acknowledges that this identity was rooted within a singular viewpoint, and we feel that now it is time to diversify our conception of what it means to be Canadian, especially in the north.
Pour célébrer le 100e anniversaire de la première exposition du Groupe des Sept, la Galerie d'art du Temiskaming a invité des artistes du nord de l'Ontario (tel que défini par la NOAA) et du nord-ouest du Québec à soumettre leurs propres interprétations de l'identité canadienne. Le Groupe des Sept a remporté un vif succès en présentant une image unifiée de l'identité canadienne enracinée dans le motif du Nord indompté. Le GAT reconnaît que cette identité était ancrée dans un point de vue singulier, et nous pensons qu'il est temps maintenant de diversifier notre conception de ce que signifie être Canadien, en particulier dans le Nord.

In response to the COVID-19 worldwide pandemic, the Temiskaming Art Gallery is launching its first-ever virtual juried exhibition Beauty in the Time of Corona. We are inviting artists from all over the world to reflect on and respond to the COVID-19 crisis in their preferred medium. This project is sponsored by Darcy and Kelly Griffith of Clean Scene Inc. with guest juror Greg Davies, artist and curator at the Cape Breton University Art Gallery.

The Temiskaming Art Gallery (TAG), along with the OSA Northern Hub, is proud to present the 2020 OSA Juried Art Exhibition. OSA member artists working in all media and disciplines were invited to submit their best work. This exhibition is a showcase for the high-quality artworks produced by the members of the Ontario Society of Artists. The work from this year's 29 selected artists is sure to inspire with a vast array of styles, mediums and subject matter. There is something for everyone.

A retrospective Journey by Walter Pape from 1966 to now.
Walter was raised and educated in Germany. He moved to Canada with his wife Maria in 1966 and settled almost immediately in New Liskeard. Walter began painting in 1967 when he discovered art classes with Muriel Newton-White and Carolyn MacArthur. For years Walter experimented with oils later switching to watercolour and more recently he has become enthused about the various printmaking techniques, especially Intaglio and Linocut printmaking.
Besides painting, Walter is also passionate about gardening and enjoys landscaping and planning his own garden during the summer months. In his visual arts practice Walter takes us through the private and sometimes intimate spaces of his garden as well as on journeys abroad, depicting the wonders of nature on a grand scale. From the rainforests of Tofino to the volcanoes of Hawaii Walter captures the power and fragility of nature making us question our place in the world. 'Being born we immediately become part of our planet earth, which is only a tiny speck in the universe. For millions of years our earth has developed into what it is now and should be sacred to us. Our earth moved, turned, lifted and shifted. Flora and fauna were created and preserved and evolved over millions of years. What did we do to the place which supports all life forms? It should be so sacred to us.' - Walter Pape
Walter was one of the first members of the Palette and Brush Club and has continued to be an active participant in the art community ever since. For over 30 years Walter was a part of the board of directors for the Temiskaming Art Gallery, initially as the chair and later as treasurer. Walter frequently exhibits his work and has work in many private and public collections throughout Canada and Europe. Walter continues to be active in the art scene and we are pleased to look back at the growth and development of his practice in his compelling show ‘Wanderlust Walz’.

Portraits, North of 17
This is a group exhibition of contemporary portraiture featuring artists: Bruce Cull, Margot Cormier Splane, Catharin Cribbs, Dermot Wilson, Iris Shields, Cesare Feraro, Reno Couchie and Sue Gamble. This is an exhibition of portraits created in 2017 and early 2018 by artists from four regions of Northeastern Ontario. This extensive exhibition will present a document of the true ‘character’ of this vibrant and isolated quarter of the province.
Within these thirty-two works are embedded notions of the limits of a scientific post-colonial ‘gaze’ and the character of the land as reflected in the expressive faces of the people of Northern Ontario.

An abstract approach to urban landscape photography. These North Bay- based artists explore the colours, shapes and textures that are the backdrop to our lives. Though each artist is distinctly individual in his photography the works come together seamlessly in the gallery space to provide a a wonderfully artistic rendition of our local landscape.
Une approche abstraite de la photographie de paysages urbains. Ces artistes basés à North Bay explorent les couleurs, les formes et les textures qui constituent la toile de fond de nos vies. Bien que chaque artiste soit distinctement individuel dans sa photographie, les œuvres se combinent parfaitement dans l'espace de la galerie pour offrir une reproduction merveilleusement artistique du paysage local.

Small fire/Le petit feu
A work in progress and interactive sound work. A pile of statuettes piled up meticulously on top of each other, artefacts made, inspired by historical models from several cultures, some disguised by figures of people close for the artist, some drawn from sketchbooks, some completely exploded during the cooking process; as the spectator approaches, a whispering voice arises, a barely audible dialogue, difficult to understand. The work, fueled by modeled statuettes cooked at a slow fire, questions our relationship with the world.

Wild Flower Buds
Since the 2000s, Joanne Poitras has been working on a series of lithographs. The subject of each of these works is a wildflower, in bud, which grows in the fields and forests here. The blooming flower draws our eye to it but it is the flower bud that interests the artist. At this time of its growth, in its folds of petals that serve as a protective shield, the flower is creating a future. This form interests me. The flower builds what it will be tomorrow. To draw more attention to this life that often develops without our knowledge, the artist represents these flower buds in a monumental form.

Mound composed of several hundred cattails picked, dried and processed, dotted, dipped in coffee powder and varnished. The whole is assembled and mounted in the form of cupola. Truncated and idealized representation of the idea of nature.
Fenêtres sur le village/Windows On The Village (sculpture)
Mound formed of charred residues from the church of Saint-Eugène-de-Guigues in Temiscamingue destroyed by the flames in 2014. The artefacts recovered are lacquered. In the days following the fire and with the agreement of the local authorities, the site was photographed, filmed and the remains of the destroyed building were collected. These artifacts seek to heal/think the imaginary. The work wants to bring the public to dream the territory.
A video projection overhangs the hill and presents a square of blue sky dotted with clouds.

A travelling juried exhibition featuring artists from the Northern Ontario Art Association.

New Vintages showcases the talent of 12 emerging artists with Northern roots in a variety of mediums and styles. The Temiskaming Art Gallery hosted a reception on June 13th, and 6 of the artists were in attendance and had the opportunity to talk about the inspiration behind their artworks.
Sollano 84: A Toller Cranston Story
March - April 2019.
Toller Cranston was a figure skater that changed how the world perceived mens figure skating. Before Toller showed off his artistic bodily movement, men figure skaters were very masculine on the ice. After Cranston introduced his unique style, he became an icon for centuries. Along with his passion of figure skating, he was extremely passionate about art. He created 20, 000 paintings and drawings in his lifetime. Although he has passed, his art continues to inspire and impact the lives of many artists and/or viewers. There was a sister exhibition Strawberry Journey: A Toller Cranston story at the Museum of Northern History in Kirkland Lake.

A travelling juried exhibition featuring artists from the Northern Ontario Art Association. 2018.
May 6 - June 30, 2018. Carlin's sculptures, paintings and videos are a surreal interweaving of legends, landscapes and dreams. This exhibition reflects on the power of chaos and role it plays in ancient and modern mythologies.
Canadian artist, David Carlin was born in Toronto, Ontario, but has lived in the Nipissing District of Northern Ontario for almost 50 years. He maintains a studio in North Bay on the north shore of Lake Nipissing.
Benjamin Chee Chee: Life and Legacy
Benjamin Chee Chee (March 26, 1944 - March 14, 1977), originally from Temagami First Nation, lived a rich and full, but tragically short, life. During his four years as a full time professional visual artist in Montreal and Ottawa his work was prolific and disparate, ranging from his iconic ‘Friends’ and ‘Benji birds’ to his less generally familiar abstracts. Benjamin Chee Chee: Life and Legacy comprises a comprehensive selection of Chee Chee’s works gathered from galleries and individuals across the province. The exhibition presents a personal perspective, achieved through multifarious collaborations, including those with close friends of Chee Chee’s. February 26 - April 20, 2018.
Benjamin Chee Chee (26 mars 1944 - 14 mars 1977), originaire de Temagami Première nation, a vécu une vie riche et plein, mais tragiquement bref. Pendant ses quatre années comme artiste visuel professionnel à temps plein à Montréal et Ottawa, son travail était prolifique et disparate, allant de ses emblématiques «amis» et «oiseaux Benji» à ses oeuvres abrastaites moins familiers. Benjamin Chee Chee: Vie et héritage comprend une sélection approfondi des œuvres de Chee Chee recueillies auprès des galeries et des individus à travers la province. L'exposition présente une perspective personnel, atteint par le biais de multiples collaborations, y compris ceux avec amis de Chee Chee.
