Clay Sculpture, 1995
This is one of a series of Puff Pots created in the mid 90’s. The inspiration comes from the puff ball mushroom. Through its life cycle it experiences stages of growth, tension and finally explosion to release its fruit (spores). This open vessel suggests the offering of its fruit. Hand-built pottery was always more exciting to me than wheel thrown. I always enjoy the challenge of controlling unregulated movement and intentions of the clay.

Voici un exemple de la série de Puff Pots créés au milieu des années 90. L’inspiration m’est venue des vesses-de-loup. Dans leur cycle de vie, elles traversent les étapes de croissance, de tension, puis d’explosion pour libérer leurs fruits (spores). L’ouverture du récipient suggère l’offrande des fruits. Pétrir la poterie à la main plutôt qu’au tour m’a toujours plus intéressée. J’aime ce défi de devoir composer avec les mouvements irréguliers et les résistances de l’argile.

Ainsi, créer des sculptures de mes enfants, c’était comme leur donner vie — pour toujours.

My original intention in this painting as an artist has been completely subverted!. My aim was an austere, non-objective diptych. ..but the horizontal borderline transformed into a ‘horizon’, the yellow canvas into a ‘sky’ and the red canvas became a ‘lake’ and vertical tree trunks were added. …Why not! The object was to create Beauty, not to reproduce likeness. …In all my work, I try to transform the lowly, medium of paint into the transcendent, immaterial illusion of light.

Mon intention originelle en entreprenant cette peinture a été complètement subvertie en cours d’exécution. J’avais en tête un diptyque austère, nullement objectif… mais la ligne horizontale s’est transformée en un ‘horizon’, le jaune de la toile en un ‘ciel’ et le rouge en un ‘lac’, à quoi j’ai ajouté des troncs d’arbre verticaux… Pourquoi pas! Le but était de créer du Beau, non de faire une ressemblance… Dans toute mon œuvre, je tâche de transformer l’humble matériau qu’est la peinture en une illusion de lumière transcendante et immatérielle.

One luminous, fiery red band hovers above three quieter bands of cooler hues; all emerging from a dark, mysterious background. The object was to create the strongest illusion of depth, or ‘push-pull’ among the few colour bands. Within the apparently minimalist composition lies a complex combination of light versus dark, warm versus cool, intense versus muted, etc.

Une bande d’un rouge lumineux et flamboyant plane au dessus de trois bandes de couleurs plus discrètes aux tonalités plus froides; le tout surgissant d’un fond sombre et mystérieux. Le but était de créer une forte illusion de profondeur, ou un jeu d’attraction et de répulsion entre les quelques bandes de couleur. Dans cette composition aux allures minimalistes, il y a une combinaison complexe entre le clair et l’obscur, le chaud et le frais, l’intense et l’assourdi, etc.

Done in the early 80’s, this work was made soon after moving north from Windsor. I had studied printmaking at university and I was anxious to try out my skills of etching combined with collagragh. Créée au début des années 80, cette œuvre a été produite peu de temps après avoir quitté Windsor pour le nord. J’avais étudié la gravure à l’université et j’avais hâte de mettre à l’épreuve mes connaissances de l’eau-forte en la combinant à la collagraphie. J’étais aussi tout excitée de déménager dans une région de lacs et de bois, toute pressée de capter le sol de la forêt, d’où l’idée de crosses de fougère arrivant à maturité.

Working on site I started by painting in blocks of burnt sienna to position the brick buildings. In this direct approach, grey is used for another building, the hillside and heap of railway ties, keeping the palette limited. Watercolour loaded on to a steel pen is used for detail.

Installée sur place, j’ai commencé par un lavis de couleur terre de sienne calcinée pour situer les immeubles de brique. Sur cet arrière-plan, j’ai utilisé du gris pour peindre un autre édifice, une colline et des traverses de chemin de fer empilées pêle-mêle. Ayant ainsi limité ma palette de couleur, j’ai ensuite tracé les détails de mon sujet au moyen d’une plume trempée dans l’aquarelle.

One evening while painting with the Cobalt Temiskaming Sketch and Brush Club, I chose this subject over yet another still life. I found the scarf colours and patterns of cap and jacket more interesting. With no preliminary drawing, I practiced a very wet, loose watercolour using directional strokes and a white wax crayon as a resist. I think the spontaneity of this style stands up today and I still use it. I like the abstract quality with just enough detail to provide information.

Un soir que je peignais en compagnie du Temiskaming Sketch and Brush Club de Cobalt, j’ai choisi ce sujet plutôt qu’une autre nature morte. Les couleurs du foulard et les motifs de la casquette et du veston ont suscité mon intérêt. Sans esquisse préliminaire, j’ai peint à l’aquarelle sur papier trempé à grands coups de pinceaux pour ensuite appliquer une réserve à la craie de cire blanche. Je crois que la spontanéité de cette approche frappe encore aujourd’hui et je l’utilise souvent. J’en apprécie la qualité abstraite à laquelle se mêlent juste assez de détails pour fournir l’information voulue.

I was attracted by the architecture of the train station representing a different era. The drawing was a challenge as the proportions had to be correct. I felt I had command of the perspective required. What I have achieved is a record of the station in its heyday. My background was in advertising design at the Ontario College of Art and I got a certification for teaching art. So painting was not my training; so having moved away from Toronto and advertising, I was finding my way and following my interests in drawing and painting.

J’ai été attirée par l’architecture de cette gare datant d’une autre époque. Le dessin me mettait au défi de respecter les proportions avec exactitude. Je me sentais en pleine possession de la perspective. Le résultat est un témoignage de la gare à ses beaux jours.
Mes antécédents scolaires sont le dessin publicitaire, à l’Ontario College of Art, et un diplôme en enseignement. Je n’ai donc pas suivi de formation en peinture; en m’éloignant de Toronto et du milieu de la publicité, j’ai cherché ma voie en développant mon intérêt pour le dessin et la peinture.

In 1969, from scientific experiments with seaweeds made by a Laval University doctor in marine biology, I got the idea to develop the artistic side by producing pictures with them. In spite of the great fragility of the seaweed, I succeeded in mounting them, preserving their texture and natural colours.

En 1969, à partir d'expériences scientifiques avec des algues faites par un docteur en biologie marine de l'Université Laval, j'ai eu l'idée de développer le côté artistique en réalisant des images avec elles. Malgré la grande fragilité des algues, j'ai réussi à les monter en préservant leur texture et leurs couleurs naturelles.

This is an etching in which I used techniques such as aquatint, hard ground etching and soft ground etching. It is of a house near Sturgeon Falls. Unfortunately it no longer exists. It burnt to the ground some years ago.
