Biographies > Laura Landers

Laura Landers is perhaps best known for her pen, ink, pastel and pencil work, particularly her whimsical series, Slice of Temiskaming and Slice of Manitoulin, which show life in northern Ontario regions. Both of these are produced in print form. But Laura is also comfortable in many other media; for instance, she has experimented with watercolour, resist and mixed media as with New Liskeard Mini-Putt.

Laura was born and raised in Noranda, Quebec. She was creating and even selling her art at an early age. In 1978 she moved with her then husband and children to Espaniola, where she fell in love with the landscapes and communities of the North Shore, LaCloche mountain range and Manitoulin. It was here that she became committed to pursuing her art. This did not diminish when she moved again to Timmins, where she joined the Porcupine Art Club and the NOAA. On moving to Haileybury, Laura volunteered at TAG and soon began a framing business initially run out of her home and then Laura’s Art Shoppe within the commercial gallery, Canvas and Clay, Etc. Laura is very involved in the local art community, belonging to the Temiskaming Palette and Brush Club and NOAA from which she has earned her letters. She has also been the volunteer curator of the Cobalt Classic Theatre Mezzanine Gallery for many years, helping to promote local and regional artists’ work. In 1991, she won the Northern Telephone Directory competition, meaning her work as published on next year’s cover of the telephone directory. She has exhibited her work in many galleries throughout the region, including TAG, the Kennedy Gallery in North Bay, and Timmins Museum and Exhibition Centre. Her work is in many private collections. 1.

Being an artist in northern Ontario. Living in northern Ontario and Quebec all of my life, I have a deep understanding and respect for the north, as well as for the people who are determined and brave enough to live here. We are influenced heavily by the weather and its unpredictability; and like the weather are ever changing.
