Biographies > Ian Bruce MacDiarmid

Bruce MacDiarmid is a ceramic artist who works from his studio in Balfour British Columbia. His work is functional and one of a kind. It relates to the natural beauty of the Kootenays. TAG holds one of his clay pieces in the collection, Plate.

Bruce was born on May 21st, 1952 in Haileybury and received his early education at Haileybury Public School and Haileybury High School. He then attended the University of Western Ontario where he graduated with a Bachelor of Social Science. While traveling abroad and in Western Canada, MacDiarmid became interested in pottery and learnt the basics of throwing on a wheel. To further his ceramic art education, he then attended Canadore College with Keith Campbell. He also attended the David Thompson University Centre in Nelson British Colombia instructed by Allison Bain. Bruce has been a studio potter since 1982 and he says his work is constantly evolving as he explores new techniques and forms.1
