Call for Submissions - A Banner Year: 150 Years of Culture in Temiskaming

A BANNER YEAR: 150 YEARS OF CULTURE IN TEMISKAMING is a community celebration to be held May 27, 2017 for Canada’s 150th birthday. This festive occasion will celebrate what it means to be Canadian with historic trivia, a historic costume contest, sing-a-longs featuring cultural favourites, a display of original artistic banners and five main stage performances. These banners will create a colourful and inviting atmosphere during our celebration, which reflects Canada’s multiculturalism and honours Aboriginal Canadian culture.

Banners will measure 36 inches wide by 72 inches long OR 12 inches wide by 36 inches long, be weather resistant, and easily rolled up. A hem of 2” needs to be included at the top and bottom of the banner for hanging purposes. Artists are responsible for return shipping and handling.

  • Create the ambience for the celebration
  • Select the most distinct banners depicting an artistic vision of Canada’s past, present or future.
  • Provide an artistic amenity for the enjoyment of all participants of the celebration.
  • The banners should reflect any of the following themes as embraced in the three founding cultures (Aboriginal, French, & English):
    • heritage
    • industry
    • historic figures & celebrities
    • sustainability
    • environment
    • buildings
    • arts
    • sports
    • technology
    • transportation
    • innovation
    • Canada’s future

The Banner Selection Committee reserves the right to accept artworks when suitable and to decide where the works are to be displayed.

2 awards of excellence of $500 will be given, 1 for each category.

All banners will be for sale with the minimum sale price to be set by the artist. The Temiskaming Art Gallery will receive 20% commission on every banner sale.
