Biographies > Ethel Brummell

Ethel Brummell’s oil paintings in the TAG collection, Untitled and Winter Scene, Haileybury Golf Course evoke a great sense of movement and open space.  It was during her thirty-five years in Haileybury that Ethel Brummel became interested in oil painting and attended Caroline MacArthur’s class at the School of Mines.  Originally from Middlesborough in England, she grew up in Vancouver and then Ottawa.  She trained at the Canadian Conservatory of Music and later as a nurse in Brookline Massachusetts.   On marrying she moved north first to Kirkland Lake for ten years and then to Haileybury.  Ethel Brummell contributed some of her work along with Bette Campbell and Eleanor Huff for one of the early shows of the new Temiskaming Art Gallery in 1980
