Donn Zver

Donn Zver is a well-known potter running a highly successful studio and café in Troy, near Brantford, Ontario. He receives up to 25,000 visitors each year. He likes to tell the story of his high school teacher who advised him not to try to make a living making pottery, and who subsequently came to cut the ribbon when he opened the studio. His functional earthenware is created in soft earthy colours. Don said in a newspaper interview, “I love the tactile quality of the clay and instantness of it. It goes from a lump to a shape in seconds”.

Donn was born in Millgrove and educated as a potter at Sheridan School of Design. He also received an Ontario Crafts Council Grant to attend the world renowned Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. He taught for some time before opening his own studio. He has lectured across Canada including the Banff School of Art and Design. His studio has been operating since 1972, where he takes on apprentices, many of whom have carried on their own careers. His work is in several public and private collections including the Dofasco Collections of Ontario Pottery, the Ontario Potters Collection, the Glenbow Gallery Permanent Collection and most recently, the Museum of Civilization. Donn exhibits his work in Canada, the United States and Europe.

Don Zver est un céramiste bien connu qui gère avec succès un studio et un café à Troy, près de Brantford, Ontario. Il accueille près de 25 000 visiteurs par année. Il aime à conter l’histoire de ses professeurs du secondaire qui lui déconseillaient la céramique pour gagner sa vie et qui, au bout du compte, sont venus couper le ruban à l’ouverture de son studio. Il crée une céramique fonctionnelle aux douces couleurs de la terre. Don disait dans une entrevue dans un journal : « J’aime la qualité tactile de l’argile et sa réaction instantanée. Il suffit de quelques secondes pour donner forme à une motte d’argile. »

Donn est né à Millgrove et a étudié la céramique au Sheridan School of Design. Il a aussi obtenu une subvention de l’Ontario Crafts Council pour lui permettre de s’inscrire à la très renommée Penland School of Crafts en Caroline du Nord. Il a fait de l’enseignement avant de fonder son propre studio. Il a donné des conférences un peu partout au Canada, y compris à la Banff School of Art and Design. Son studio fonctionne depuis 1972 et lui sert à former des apprentis-céramistes dont plusieurs font maintenant carrière autonome. Son œuvre figure dans plusieurs collections publiques et privées, entre autres Dofasco Collections of Ontario Pottery, l’Ontario Potters Collection, la collection permanente de la Galerie Glenbow et, plus récemment, le Musée de la Civilisation. Donn expose ses œuvres au Canada, aux États-Unis et en Europe.
